2 out of 5 stars Underwhelming   April 5, 2008

I got nearly halfway through this book before I had to stop. It seems that each bite-sized section of this book is a near-repetition of the last. It could be pared down to one rather broad concept: To make a strong connection with someone, find out all you can about them, especially how to help them, so that they will want to connect with you. Well, yeah. No kidding.

If you want to learn exactly how to do that, I recommend "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. Now that is a five-star read, a classic from the 30's, which is full of substance, teaching how to build relationships and resolve conflicts with tact and sincerity. Even though it is old, the concepts in it will always be applicable.

Gitomer's book, while seeking to adapt Carnegie principles to the modern day, makes the attempt with more style than substance. Chapters and subchapters end in .5 - which is catchy, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, and the concepts in each chapter are illustrated in broad terms with little elaboration.

It is also rather self-promoting, with frequent references to Gitomer's website (page 85: "Want to know the 40.5 Gitomer info-bits that you need to know about others to connect on a more personal level and build a relationship? Go to www.gitomer.com, register if you are a first time user, and enter the words NEED TO KNOW in the GitBit box.") You'll get your own username, password, and free weekly e-zine!! (Oh, by the way, he recommends everyone should publish their own free weekly e-zine... I think that may be appropriate for a few people. But not everyone is Jeffrey Gitomer.)

If Gitomer is trying to be the modern-day Dale Carnegie, I think he's missed the mark.

4 out of 5 stars Network Your Way to Success!   March 27, 2008

Learn for the master of making connections - Jeffrey Gitomer. Gitomer simplifies the art of networking and making connections by providing lists, real life stories, quotes, and online resources. The book is a fast-paced read that will force you to do some self-evaluation. Gitomer also provides free tidbits from his website to further assist you in making and keeping connections.

LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF CONNECTIONS is a great resource for those wanting to increase their skills in networking. The six assets presented in the book: who do you know, what you want, what do you do, how do you connect, who knows you, the secret power and value of connections will open your eyes to the power of developing connections. The three draw backs (if that is what you want to call it) are: the continual mention of Gitomer's company, the various type fonts and repetition of ideas. Take the first step in recharting your future - take advantage of your connections.

5 out of 5 stars the latest Gitomer fan!!!   March 6, 2008
What a great book!! It's an enjoyable book to read. The large print really grabs your attention. I would recommend this to all my friends who want to get ahead in the business world. Why isn't this being read everywhere? I loved this book and am looking to read more of his titles.
A lot of his information is common sense, but not everyone sees it that way. He writes using his life for personal examples. If you're looking to excel in the business world, this book is for you!!

1 out of 5 stars Disgraceful. Complete drivel.   January 7, 2008

If this isn't the worst book ever printed, I don't know what is. All this book will tell you is that the author is self-obsessed, and that networking is important if you want to be in sales. Groundbreaking research! Do you really need a book to remind you to be friendly? Or to carry business cards? Or to take notes? All this book proves is that anyone can write one. Anyone.
