Southern Revival August 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The best cook book I've read in years! I've already cooked 1/2 of the recipes in the short time I've owned it. Not only are the recipes easy to follow and make, but she provides plenty of helpful hints and lots of wonderful, truly Southern, sarcastic comic relief. I find myself laughing a loud as she coyly refers to Meme's Fried Backfat as "seriously old fashioned country food." Although many of the recipes come from her family heritage, her classical French training is also well represented. Meme's Blackberry Cobbler recipe alone is worth the price of the book. It has been the hit of 3 dinner parties and is hands down the dessert of 2008!
Southern with a flair August 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this book. The recipes were easy to follow and the results great. Really enjoyed her comments. I enjoyed it so much that I bought extra copies for my family for Christmas.
Good and Easy Eats August 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I haven't had the book too long. Made the crab cakes last night and we loved them. Other receipes my wife and I have tried are the chicken fricassee, catfish fingers with country remoulade, gumbo and others. I bought the book as a gift for my daughters because they are good cooks. This book provides good receipes, with easy to use instructions. Good source for people who like to eat well.
wonderful but... August 5, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love this cookbook and use it often, however I am dissapointed that a few typos made it into such a book. For example, one recipe neglects to state the baking temperature. But I have enjoyed learning more about southern food. I enjoy these recipes and so does my family!
Real Food with History and Personality July 26, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Virginia Willis's "Bon Appetit Y'All" has become one of my favorite cookbooks because of its delicious and diverse selection of recipes. When you add the author's distinct personality and history, shown in her intros for each chapter and comments which accompany each recipe, you feel like you are cooking with a friend. Once you have tried some of these recipes you may think that each comes with a bona fide guarantee. The flavors are authentic and the recipes that I have prepared have been without exception mouthwateringly good, including an okra recipe which could convert the most avowed okra hater. Ms. Willis has recreated a heritage of cooking lost to many of us and pairs that heritage with modern technique. The result is both healthy and tasty food, which is inspiring new family memories at our house.
