Summer-Bore August 16, 2006 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I began this book with such high hopes since I had so thoroughly enjoy Kavalier & Clay. In the end, I was just bored with the book. There were too many characters to keep track of and I felt that what was told in 500 pages could have been told even better in half that space.
A childrens book...at first March 15, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is labeled for children from the get-go. This is understandable, but how do you classify a book that uses easy to understand language, and yet heavily takes from Norse mythology (not to mention the plethora of names thrown at the reader in quick succesion)? If you know anything about Norse mythology, you know exactly where Chabon is coming from. It's funny at times the way he matches up old charactors with new faces that represent the previously serious with stupidity and things of that nature. This is a book you read when you're young, then re-read again to catch it all. I can see where some people are coming from when they claim the book takes too long to start, but I dont share these opinions. The book was put together that way for a reason. It lays the foundation for the understanding of the more complex concepts of the book. I personally wish he'd explained more thoroughly. This book was written for children with the best intentions, but i think Chabon lost his original purpose in writing this. I loved this book, but I believe it is mislabeled.

I loved this book! It's great for anyone who wants to read about life and baseball. This book is a fun and exciting book that you can't put down until you finish it. Summerland gets more exciting as you go. the characters in this book are Ethan Feld, Mr.Feld, and Jennifer T. The book follows all of these characters through the summer as they play baseball and venture through life. Also this book has mystery as Ethan meets a mysterious man on the other side of the fence at the ball field. This book will excite you and get you reading even if you don't like too.Summerland was one of the best books I've ever read. You've got to go out and find this book.you will absolutly love it.

Life, the World and Baseball October 25, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the first children's book by Michael Chabon, and it's a winner. It's a complex tale about baseball and magical worlds. See, it turns out that all the characters from myths, lengends and fairy tales actually exist. The dimension they live in (and ours as well), is threatened with destruction by the trickster Coyote (from Native American mythology). It's up to 11-year-old Ethan Feld and his friends to stop him. Will Ethan save the multiverse, and learn to love baseball? Read this amazing book and find out.
