good read August 10, 2008 1 out of 15 found this review helpful
I almost didn't buy this book because of the bad reviews. Ms. Hamilton writes in a flawless manner. I can never put her books down and find myself trying to slow down so I can savor the book. This does not happen with most authors. I'm glad I got it and can't wait for the next one.
Absolute cr@p August 9, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am done. Done with this ridiculous excuse for a series. I am a book junkie. I read everything from sleazy romances, through steaming hot erotica, to gory fantasy, though there are a few books I can claim bored me to tears, but this one is, as of today, at the top of that short list. I couldn't even make it through the fifth chapter. As a self-respecting, book-loving woman I simply cannot, and more importantly, will not continue to torture my mind with this absurd, plot-deprived junk. I mean, how ludicrous can this incoherent babbling disguised as a book get? Just the dialogue that, I suppose, served as an introduction to the book had me wondering whether LKH was on drugs while writing it. "Oh, Jason I am so very sorry your EVIL bitch of a girlfriend made you have only normal sex, and in bed of all places! How could she?! And she wants you to have sex with her alone? How evil can a person get! But, do not worry, you can always f*ck my brains out. What are friends for?" Whether to laugh or cry, I really cannot decide. And the sex scene? If I weren't so busy being turned off and disturbed by it, I would have been rolling on the floor with hysterical laughter. And I am not talking about the BDSM as an idea and essence, hell I usually like a little top/bottom dynamic. But LKH is painfully oblivious to such things. Enough as a safe word? Come on! A safe word is supposed to be something that wouldn't usually come up during sex so thing don't get confusing. Enough? Ha! Yes in deed, enough already! Enough of this mind-numbing stupidity, enough of this complete waste of paper and ink. Just Enough. Stop with the horribly bad porn and let's move on. Isn't it time for this sex-starved flame thing to get under control? It's so six books ago! I am never, and I mean NEVER, paying one more cent for an LKH book. There are far too many good writers out there for me, or anyone for that matter, to waste time and money on reading LKH's sex fantasies. Ugh, I feel dirty...
Disappointing August 8, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
What a disappointment. This author is capable of so much more. The plot is weak, the story line rambles, and who is this Anita Blake? Certainly not the person the readers fell in love with. It's all well and good to say that charaters have to grow but let's be realistic here. If any one of us made such a drastic deportment from ourselves the people we love would have us locked up. Of course, when you surround yourself whipped monsters I guess it's easy to get away with just about anything. I have a feeling these books have become little more then a sounding board for Ms. Hamilton to vent and lecture all those people who would never pay attention otherwise. I think I have most likely put the last dollar I'll ever spend on one of her books in her pocket already.
Unhappy August 7, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was hoping that LKH would go back to writing the way she did when she first published. I started BN and couldn't make it past the first chapter. I'm no prude but I'm not a fan of soft porn or hard porn. Anita used to be smart, fair but was able to do the right thing. Now it's just about sex. There is no more story or even characters you could love, hate or just be impartial too.
I wish that she would see what she is doing to her career and to the fans who have loved the books that she wrote in the beginning.
A travesty August 7, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Seriously, where's the plot? If this book were made into a film, it would be shorter than the trailers. The story itself can be summarized in less time than it takes to think, 'wow, this book is completely devoid of substance.'
I borrowed a copy of this from a family member and figured I'd at least give it a try. LKH adheres to her tired tropes and starts out the book with a massive, badly-written sex scene that I actually found myself flipping past. More personal drama, more angst, more emo, and even Jean-Claude has a 'oh woe is me!' moment as I desperately page through, looking for a storyline. All is for naught, though, as the entire book plays out like a 'Days of Our Lives' as performed by a bunch of hormone-ridden high-schoolers.
The only thing that this book has in common with the old storyline is the name of the main characters. None of them are remotely like the characters introduced originally, save Anita, who has simply become a self-insertion parody of the original.
Simply: don't pay for this book. I'm glad I hadn't.
