Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" covers topics of great depth, including the nature of a father's relationship with his son, in austere brevity. As in McCarthy's book, No Country for Old Men (Vintage International), the author utilizes a staccato and direct prose to address and probe issues of great scale and scope.
The dark and foreboding background of this story is always hovering around the storyline in a manner that is rarely duplicated across literature. The simplicity with which the story arc evolves, combined with this ever-present background, make for a framework around which topics such as a father-son relationship stand out in interesting relief.
I highly recommend this book.

This is my first McCarthy, given to me by a friend. I put off reading it and then could not put it down. It is a beautiful story and a terrible story, written by a magician. Wonderful!
An American Masterpiece, Unfathomable Scope August 14, 2008
The Road is one of those rare books that are haunting, evocative and timeless. Unlike other novels by McCarthy, the road actually transcends time, distance, and national origin. It is the story about a father's love, hope and the will to survive. It is, in the end, a victory for the human spirit to endure and understand what these two survivors face while making their way on "The Road".
Not For Everyone August 13, 2008
This is not a beach book or a chick lit book. You need to really use your brain on this one. It's an interesting book about a dad and son going across a land after a major attack with nothing out there and how they survive. I describe this as a thinking person book. It goes quick.

It's cool that Oprah likes this story, but if you're already a McCarthy fan you don't need her endorsement. He can find the darkest places in the hearts of humans and take you to them. If you are like me, you will be on the Road with the boy and papa for a while, not just while your reading it. McCarthy drills home the description of the environs and the fear in the characters while leaving enough room for the reader to imagine a host of other horrors. A beautiful tale of parental love without the usual sap and sugar. Gripping and powerful. Grab a tin of peaches and read The Road.
