4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars   July 20, 2006

Good read, however I gave this four stars since I thought the second section on India was just average, even dull - there was just too much navel gazing and self-pity for my taste. Loved the other two sections. The author has an endearing sense of humor and a resilient attitude to life. She also manages to bring out the complexity of the characters, the woman in Indonesia she tries to help is a particularly memorable episode in the book. This is also a great travel book, made me feel like I was in those places she was talking about.

I listened to the audio version of this book, amazingly unabridged, and not a few CD's long. It is worth getting this version rather than the book. The author Elizabeth Gilbert herself reads this book. She has a sensitive voice, one of experience and pain, but also full of compassion. It is also a rich voice, yet at times threatens to crack. Her voice is a myriad of emotions and the voices of various characters are done so well, that when she spoke as another person, I only heard that character. Her stories are heartwrenching, uplifting. Some of them made me laugh out loud. They made me want to go to Italy (did), India (didn't), Indonesia (didn't).
Overall, it is a story of transformation, from sadness to happines. This woman's year-long struggle wasn't an easy one. Aren't all of our struggles?
When it was all over, I realized with sadness that I wasn't going to hear Elizabeth Gilbert's voice anymore.
An amazing must-hear. I wish her well.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous, Well Written, Interesting Account   July 14, 2006

I enjoyed this book immensely. Liz Gilbert is an excellent writer; interesting, amusing, a very good story teller. India and Italy are the TWO places I want to visit most; so this book was a great read for me; yet the last section on Indonesia was probably the most interesting from a pure story line perspective. Throughout the book she gives a lot of personal accounts of her life and struggles; I think it takes courage to write about such personal matters, and I applaud it. I can't wait to read her next book whenver it comes out. I also enjoyed another book of hers; Last American Man.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!   July 13, 2006

What a fabulous book! Heard Elizabeth interviewed on NPR and couldn't wait to buy her book! She writes just as lyrically as she speaks! A story of insight, of personalities, and of learning about ourselves! She is hilarious and introspective at the same time. Even though she is much younger than I, I felt such oneness with her thoughts - plus, I know these places very well so that made it extra meaningful!

5 out of 5 stars Borrowed E,P,L. from a friend then ordered my own copy   July 12, 2006

You'd have to know what a cheapskate I can be and that I almost NEVER read a book a second time -- even when I tell myself I will -- to know what a huge deal it is for me to buy a hardcover copy of a book I've already read. That's how much I loved the book.

Elizabeth Gilbert is just a flat-out wonderful writer. Any story she has to tell would be worth reading, it seems to me. Her voice grabbed me at the start and I literally could not put down the book. I read it over two days and was racing the clock to finish it on Sunday night so I could discuss it over dinner with the friend I'd borrowed it from.

Many people who've posted here have done a wonderful job of encapsulating the basic premises of this book. I'll just had that this book has the wonderful, indescribableness of Anne Lamott's nonfiction. You learn so much, you laugh so much, you feel so much. All the joys of reading are here. Highly recommended!
