Transportation Designer's Dream March 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have to say that I am very pleased with the illustrations and drwaings that Daniel Simon has cretaed for this book. The stories are entertaining to read and the illustrations are great. If you are looking for clean drawings, you will find it here. A lot of 3D renderings are shown for the final piece of each major vehicle he produces for the book, but there are nice progression pages that show Simon going from rough drawing concepts, to refined pen drawings with photoshop shading to complete detail perfect images. If you are a car designer, want to be one, or appreciate them, you need this in your library.
Slick and interesting... but is it satisfying? February 20, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
We've entered a little pause in the parade of space opera and related films. Those films have created another market for people who only watch them in order to see lavish production designs. For you who've bought various "Art of ..." books, "Cosmic Motors" is your kind of material. The photo-realistic, computer-enhanced designs in that book are nice, but they aren't as memorable as the best entries in the genre. The shapes that these elaborate textures are built upon are too simple; design-school graduates need to avoid the pitfall of oversimplifying the shapes that their textures will cover. This is like serving a dry cake with great frosting. Make sure that the basic forms flow nicely and look right, before you texture them, O.K. designers?
Inspiring, abstract, complex and very balanced designs February 17, 2008 This book gives a very nice overview of d.s. working style. The simple sketches have a magic abstract touch, and the renderings are very sophisticated, all of hem in grays. Most of them are big enough to really feel the viewed image.
He understands to create a certain kind of magic I haven't seen with any other concept designer besides Robertson, Church and Goerner.
The interesting fact is that all sketches are drawn on paper and hen overworked in photoshop which I think is really nice especially nowadays w everybody seems to go crazy about the cintiq.
His understanding of adding details at the right place of his vehicles is mind-blowing ! Nothing seems overshaped !, also the 3d models are very very nice, but with closer looks some textures are appealing cheap to me.
He defenatly brings it to the next level by combining all production methods for a very satisfying result.
I would have liked to see a little bit more stuff one cannot find on his site.
Thus only 4.5
defenately a HUGE inspiration for all designers and a most for all fans of the concept design genre.
