Awesome book, if you can "get" the simplicity of it. July 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Widowed, depressed, jobless and didn't know what to do with myself; I stumbled across Oprah's website and found out about this book. What drew me in was the subtitle "Awakening to Your Life's Purpose". Every job I've ever had I've hated. I need a job, but I don't want one! I have very few reliable friends, and too many unreliable one's. Even my immediate family seems like a huge disappointment. What was I to do?
I literally felt as if I was going mad, and my life was over at age 42.
The simplicity of thought in this book seems widely criticized. However, I will tell you it is this simple mindset that saved my life, snapped me out of my depression, and got me interested in exploring the world again.
I can't say that I have "found my life's purpose", as I'm now convinced it's undefinable. But, I am no longer "as" concerned about what ifs and what could have been. The simple presence of "Now", answers each and every moment when I dare to question my life's purpose. I'm not saying I've got it, and it never slips away. I'm saying, that when I remember to notice "Now", I remember that I don't need to foretell the future. And I don't need to worry about the past. I try to remember "Now" as often as possible.
The only trouble with the thoughts and methods outlined in the text is that it is apparently too simple to grasp affectively. I've heard and read so many comments trying to complicate it's message. Trying to turn the book into a study group, or a philosophy in and of itself. Even what Oprah is doing is a bit out of context with what the book is about. This is a book review, not an Oprah review, but I have to say that Oprah's ego was awakening to my ego on more than one occasion. I really don't care if Oprah "gets it" or not. Please, can we just let Eckhart talk about the book!
Anyway, I'm not going to pretend that I have any more insight than anyone else. But, this book is well worth a read to find out if it rings true for you. It may end up that you don't like it, and you wasted your money; as it has for so many others. But if resonates for you, it has the potential to change your entire outlook on life. For the better I'd say.
A Life Changing Book July 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been reading books about spirituality for most of my life and for me this is one of the best, if not the best, I have ever read. It makes living in the moment more accessible - a user friendly book. It is a life changing book. A valuable addition to the book is the Tolle/Oprah collaboration series on podcasts and is available free at iTunes->podcasts->religion & spirituality->oprah's.com spirit channel. I've listened to these podcasts, they are excellent and Tolle is a very likeable man and I sense no guile or ego at all.
I highly recommend this book.
Not a spiritual book July 11, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It would be a mistake to call this a spiritual book. I think it is a "be happy" pop psychology book with some spiritual generalities thrown into the pot. The author says that if you don't get it, then you simply are not ready to get it. That kind of "logic" is highly suspicious. This is religion for yuppies, divorced from any moral requirements, full of feel good nonsense. It is NOT Hindusim.

Changes your life July 10, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is truly one that everyone should read sometime in their life. If you read it and throw it aside, it isn't the right time for you to read it. However, if you read it and "get it", your life will never be the same. Truly awesome, thought-provoking, and opens you up to what you are inside. You learn to recognize the ego in all of us and how to rid yourself of its influence.
