 Nice idea, but these bags stink! May 31, 2008

They literally stink!
These bags come in cute colors, and I do like to use them for groceries and other things, but I've had them for two weeks and the bad smell still hasn't dissipated. The smell first hit me when I opened the package (smells like gasoline, or something fume-y that gives me a headache).
Originally, I wanted to leave them in my car to have them with me at all times, but after the first night, the fumes had filled the interior of my car and I had to roll down the windows to air it out. I didn't want my almost-one year old daughter to smell this when she rode in the car with me, so each night I air out the bags and put them back into my car. Not exactly convenient. I haven't washed these bags yet, so I'm not sure if the smell will go away after washing, but how many of us are in the habit of washing these bags before use? Also, this material wrinkles quite easily, so I can imagine if I hand-washed these, I shouldn't wring them out.
I was hoping to love these bags, but the terrible smell is overwhelming. I mean, even mattresses and furniture air out in a couple of days. How long will it take these bags?
One note about the strap length- Just a one or two inches longer and I'd be able to use one hand to lift the bag onto my shoulder. As it currently is, the strap is just a tiny bit too short to do so one-handed; I have to use my other hand to hoist the bag onto the opposite shoulder. Just a nitpicky thing- it's the test I do with handbags and such, to make sure I can do things one-handed. It's an important thing to me since the other arm is usually holding a baby.

These bags are great. They fold very flat so they don't take up a lot of space when not in use and when in use they hold so much more then it looks like. And unlike the store's reusable bags they don't feel like they are going to rip if you fill them up. Very durable and a great value. Thanks.

I used these today for the first time - they fold very flat to transport easily and the bottom inserts make for a strong base. Each bag holds more than a standard plastic grocery bag and the material/handles seem to be very sturdy.
Usually, I leave the grocery store with about 10 plastic bags - today I had only 2 (beef & chicken), so I'm really feeling good about that.
I also bought a set of the regular totes to use for non-grocery items (like bath/cleaning/hardware products).
I had purchased Wal-Mart store brand reusable bags a few months ago, but they were thin and not sturdy at all - these CYMA bags are the best I have seen yet!

I can't tell you how much I love these bags!!! I bought them a couple months ago, and love them so much I've purchased some for my family and friends to use. I was getting so sick of the small thin bags from the grocery; I tried my best to make use of them in different ways (lunch, trash), but always ended up having to throw a bunch away because you get so many just from one trip to the grocery.
These hold so much more (3-4 of the small bags worth), hold their shape unlike the canvas bags (contents don't end up rolling around your trunk), and are much easier to haul up to my 2nd story apartment. They also have some with compartments in which to pack 2-liter bottle of soda so they stand up. I just keep a few in my trunk and pull them out as I need them, no matter how big or small the trip.
Some people are writing that they're no better than the other platic bags because they too are made of plastic, but you reuse them so many times that they make much more ecological sense. Plus, they have many other uses and can act as general tote bags. You can also throw them in the gentle cycle of the washing machine.

I have two sets of these bags. I buy for a family of five. They hold so much and are very sturdy. I love that they are not plastered with obnoxious "green" themes (nope, I don't buy into the whole global warming business, but I get tired of throwing all those plastic bags away). At first I had problems with how to carry them while I was shopping. I take my 1, 2 and 4 year olds with me shopping and so have plenty to worry about without having to carry a bunch of bags. When I put them in the cart, they got buried under the groceries, which didn't endear me to the baggers and people behind me in line since I had to unload the cart before they could begin bagging. I finally found my solution. I bought the GIANT 7-3/4" Snap Hook - Carabiner Carry Handle with Soft-Grip and several sets of mini carabiners. I put one mini carabiner on a handle of each bag in case my cart began to overflow. Now I can just hook bags around the sides of the cart and fill the bags. When I go into the store, I have all the bags hooked on the giant carabiner and I simply hook it to the side of the cart. It is easy then at check-out to take the bags off and hand them to the bagger before unloading the cart. If you carry a lot of bags like me, I would also recommend the carabiner. But the bags are great, colorful and sturdy. A great option for my family.
