Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Leona Hewitt, disguised in men’s formal evening clothes, has secretly made her way into Lord Delbridge’s private museum to recover a relic stolen from her family years ago. But someone else is there in the dimly lit gallery, on the same errand: a tall, black-cloaked man whose very voice is enough to put her in a trance.

Thaddeus Ware, a mesmerist with powerful psychic energy, is accustomed to fearful reactions from others - women in particular. After all, a man who can control the minds and actions of others could rob a lady of her virtue - without her ever knowing! But Leona shows no trace of hysteria in his presence. A force to be reckoned with as both a gifted crystal worker and a woman, she exerts a rather hypnotic power over the hypnotist himself. And she is determined to keep the crystal they recovered, by giving him the slip at a run-down London inn.

Thaddeus, on assignment for the secretive Arcane Society, knows the menace Leona is courting by absconding with the crystal. It is a source of remarkable energy, and it holds the potential for great destruction. Lord Delbridge has already killed two men to acquire it, for it is his key to membership in the elite, shadowy group known as the Third Circle. And with the help of a seductive hunter of preternatural skill, dubbed “The Midnight Monster” by the press, Delbridge intends to find her. With the stolen crystal in their possession, the danger is only beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful   August 23, 2008
I love this book. Shipped when and received as promised. Will order again.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read!   August 12, 2008
I have read quite a few of Quicks books and this one is worth the read! I could not put it down! The subject was interesting and the characters were believeable. The romance could have been a little more involved. Overall, if you like her writing you should be satisfied with this book.

1 out of 5 stars Villains and blackguards   August 11, 2008

Bloody hell! Damnation! The Third Circle is so full of dastardly Victorians blustering on about the disruption of their villainous plans that it's hard to find the plot. That damnable woman keeps interfering and somehow, the cads can't manage to get rid of her in spite of their mastery of the "psychical arts." I like a good paranormal novel, but this is the second of Quick's novels that I've struggled through. Since reading should be enjoyable, not irritating, I'm off to find an author who relies less on formula and cliche.

4 out of 5 stars Better to read than to listen but worth the time   August 7, 2008
I read the other books of this series but purchased The Third Circle on MP3 audio. I have to say that it seemed to lose something in the audio. I would have rated the other books in the Arcane Series (both the Amanda Quick book and the JAK books) as a solid 5 stars. But this one didn't grab me quite like the others. I really attribute that to the reader because it was very difficult at time to distinguish one character from another. That made it difficult to follow. The story itself was good and it did add some information to the Jones family history and the presumed history of the Nightshade organization of the comtemporary JAK novels in the same series. Hearing from Gabriel and Venetia Jones again was also nice since the books following "Second Sight" take place 200 years later and they are deceased. If you have read the previous books or intend to read subsequent books in this series, I would recommend reading this one as well but don't expect it wo be quite as stimulating.

3 out of 5 stars Luke Warm, Prefer Red Hot!   August 5, 2008
I've liked this series so far, but this book just kind of saunters along, expecting you to like it because it's part of the series rather than making it stand on its own merit. It's basically a sort of mystery/suspense tale in which a mesmerist who can make people do things meets a female crystal-gazer who is as strong as him. They are both trying to retrieve a powerful crystal and keep it out of the hands of the bad guys. It's a very formulaic plot, with the obligatory evil serial killer who preys on prostitutes and has no conscience, although he's not smart enough to realize he's being used by the other bad guy, Lord Delafield, to find the crystal so he can join the Arcane Society. The romance is very tepid--the third time they see each other, they're already in each other's pants in the conservatory at his house and a "psychic bond" is formed between them so from that point on they're a couple. The heroine, Leona, is OK, but overly talkative and constantly trying to avoid emotional responses or logical reactions by over-analyzing them. The hero is also OK, but I didn't really understand why they were so in love, based on their reactions to each other. There were lots of references to other books in the series, but not to the point where they detracted from the story. Overall, not a book I would recommend to a friend, unless they wanted to read it so they could have read every book in the series.
