Product Description
In sumptuous and illuminating detail Simon Winchester chronicles the extraordinary story of Joseph Needham, the brilliant Cambridge scientist who turned his eccentric genius on the study of China. In 1937 Joseph Needham fell in love with a visiting Chinese student. He soon became fascinated by China, and his mistress persuaded him to travel to her home country. Thus began his undying passion for the world's most populous nation. Needham tackled one of the great, unanswered historical questions: Why did a nation that had invented so much and had enjoyed 5,000 years of flourishing civilization, fail to undergo an industrial revolution, and instead spend so many modern years mired in poverty and racked by instability and revolution? By the time he died, Needham had produced seventeen immense volumes on China, marking him as the greatest one-man encyclopaedist ever. Both epic and intimate, The Man Who Loved China tells the sweeping history of China through Needham's remarkable life. Here is an unforgettable tale by one of the world's inimitable storytellers.

a formula book October 1, 2008 The problem with this book is that Simon Winchester is grinding them out of the "mill" now. When an author produces books beyond a certain rate, they tend to become formulaic and by-the-numbers. Everything that was fresh in "the professor and the madman" has become a stale formula in this book. Its all assembly-line craft and no passion.
If you have never read one of his books, I would recommend it. Its not his best, but its respectable. But otherwise.....We don't need any more formula books about european eccentrics who made some great contribution that nobody has ever heard of.
Excellent Story September 30, 2008 A fantastic story about a man and his passion for life and work and about a country so far ahead yet so far behind. I am no historical buff but this (audio) book made me keep wanting to get into my car so that I could hear more. The storyteller is good to listen to and the images are real.
Superbly rearched and written tribute to a great man September 25, 2008 I read this book cover to cover in one sitting on a long flight to China. The book is well researched, superbly written, and all together a loving tribute to Joseph Needham, who came alive between the covers. Highly recommended to anyone.
China September 20, 2008 Very great read. I could not put it down. It certainly changed my view of Chinese history and innovation.
China and Cambridge September 5, 2008 A very readable and excellently researched and written account of the life, adventures and discoveries of the Cambridge don, Joseph Needham
