Amazon.com In this contemporary English version of the New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs, Eugene Peterson strives to convey the earthy truths of the original Greek and Hebrew texts. As he explains in his introduction, there were two levels of language in the Greek-speaking world, "formal" and "informal". The one was for use in official documents, epic poetry, and philosophy, the other for shopping lists and personal letters--the common idiom of everyday speech. "This is the language used throughout the New Testament ... a rough and earthy language that reveals God's presence and action where we least expect it, catching us when we are up to our elbows in the soiled ordinariness of our lives and God is the furthest thing from our minds." It is in the spirit of this "soiled ordinariness" that Eugene Peterson translates John 1:14 (NIV: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us") to "The word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood." Likewise, in Romans 8:3 where the NIV renders "For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering," The Message reads, "God went for the jugular when he sent his own son.... In his son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all." Peterson offers no pretense of elevated language or intellectualism, only the insistence that God is relevant in 20th-century work-week and weekend lives. This kind of translation is not a new enterprise, however. Tyndale--the man singularly responsible for our English translations of the Bible--is purported to have said in a dispute with opposing clergy, "If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy that driveth the plow to know more of the Scriptures than thou dost." We're simply glad someone of our own generation chose to do the same. --Benjamin Gebhardt

What would happen if you received a letter from God? Would your heart pound? Would your mind race? Would your life change? With The Message, Eugene Peterson's best-selling paraphrase of the Bible, you can join the millions of readers who have experienced God's Word in the form of a personal message. Enthusiasm for The Message has boosted its popularity as the most reader-friendly Bible available today. Every book of Scripture unfolds like a page-turner you can't put down! With no distracting verse numbers or stiff, formal language, passages you've read many times before will come alive, revealing the vibrant energy of God's Word. "I hope that when readers find the poetry, the stories, the prayers, the songs in this Book in their language -- the sort of language in which it was written -- they will read it from cover to cover, nonstop," says Eugene Peterson. The challenge for the translators was to create a text that would make the same impact in the life of modern readers that the original text had for the original readers. In the New Living Translation, this is accomplished by translating entire thoughts (rather than just words) into natural, everyday English. The end result is a translation that is easy to read and understand and that accurately communicates the meaning of the original text.
"Whether it's the poetry of the Psalms, the thundering tirades of the Old Testament prophets, or the ageless words of Jesus, Peterson breathes new life into timeless passages in this fresh-voiced paraphrase." CINDY CROSBY

An excellent adjunct to the Bible July 11, 2008 This is NOT a substitute for the Bible scriptures. But it is a book that is an excellent aid after you have read a Biblical passage that is somewhat confusing. Peterson's text is written in modern language that is easy to read.
The Truth about God July 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great Bible if you like to just sit down and read it through. The "message" of how good God is comes through as you read. The quality of the book itself is outstanding--nice genuine leather cover, easy to read print, not too large and not too small. This particular edition is not as good for use as a study Bible because verses aren't numbered, except at the beginning of paragraphs.
Easier reading! June 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The larger type in this Bible makes for much easier reading. Some of the advertised large types are still not large enough to help much. Also, I can find certain passages better with the verses being numbered. The Message Bible is easy to understand because it reads like the way people talk today. It is exactly like new. Thank you.
An inductive commentary - not a Bible per se' June 18, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Disclaimer: This is a review of "The Message" as a publication, not of this particular binding.
While Mr.Peterson has some refreshingly plain and sometimes very apt insights into what God's Word is saying, in modern vernacular, please keep in mind that this is not a "literal" translation. In fact, if there ever was a translation of a translation, as one reviewer put it, this is it!
Be sure and remember that this is Mr. Peterson's "take" on the Word of God. He invests so much of his interpretation into this translation that it should more accurately be called an "Inductive Commentary".
While at times Peterson makes a thought or point clearer (Romans 7 for example), it seems to me that many other times his interpretation muddies the waters a bit (Romans 8). He also tends to be a bit presumptuous about changes he makes. For example (and I use this as it's not doctrinal) in Job 41:25 he writes "Even angels run for cover when he surfaces, cowering before his tail-thrashing turbulence." vs the NASB's "When he raises himself up, the mighty fear; Because of the crashing they are bewildered." I think it's a bit of a leap to presume that "the mighty" are angels or that any angel would be bewildered by one of God's creatures.
If you decide to purchase or read "The Message" please compare what Mr.Peterson says with what God has said, in a more literal translation such as the NASB,ESV,RSV,KJV or even the NIV. Trusting in "The Message" alone is akin to trusting your soul to a man. It's maddening to me when a person is confronted with a biblical truth, and answers "I'll have to ask my pastor about that." Using "The Message" as your only window into God's mind is like that. And I consider it somewhat dangerous as a result.
Fantastic value June 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For anyone who already knows about the Message Bible paraphrase, this is a fantastic find. I have bought 2 of them and plan to purchase more. The quality is great and I found nothing to compare at this price. It is great as a gift and for someone who wants to understand more about the Bible, this is a great way to read it.
