Book Description
Before she attended the prestigious French cooking school Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne, Virginia Willis had been shelling butterbeans alongside her mother and grandmother in her Georgia family kitchen ever since she could stand on a stool. These divergent influences inform her passionate homage to the cooking of the South. From simple starters and slaws to generous entrees and desserts, Willis makes down-home cooking refined and haute cuisine friendly, with recipes like Vidalia Onion Soup with Bacon Flan, Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Mama's Barbecue Sauce, and Hot Vanilla Souffles with Vanilla Ice Cream. Brimming with stories, tips, techniques, and gorgeous photographs, BON APPETIT, Y'ALL seamlessly blends Willis's Southern and French roots into a memorable and thoroughly modern cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Real Food with History and Personality   July 26, 2008
Virginia Willis's "Bon Appetit Y'All" has become one of my favorite cookbooks because of its delicious and diverse selection of recipes. When you add the author's distinct personality and history, shown in her intros for each chapter and comments which accompany each recipe, you feel like you are cooking with a friend.
Once you have tried some of these recipes you may think that each comes with a bona fide guarantee. The flavors are authentic and the recipes that I have prepared have been without exception mouthwateringly good, including an okra recipe which could convert the most avowed okra hater.
Ms. Willis has recreated a heritage of cooking lost to many of us and pairs that heritage with modern technique. The result is both healthy and tasty food, which is inspiring new family memories at our house.

5 out of 5 stars Kitchen Staple   July 25, 2008
I have studied Southern food for years, yet I've never found another book like this one. Each page enlightens cooks of all skill levels. The recipes are written meticulously well while Virginia's beautiful writing brings back memories of times gone by. Ms. Willis has written about Southern food the way it should be - honest. My copy has a permanent home right in my kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just Another Southern Cookbook   July 23, 2008
I've been a longtime fan of Virginia's cooking classes and her contributions to Marvin Wood's Home Plate so her fabulous recipes were of no surprise. Virginia does a remarkable job of bringing these recipes to life with funny anecdotes and personal accounts of growing up in the kitchen alongside her mother and grandmother. The stories alone make you want to try the recipes. You'll not only find tasty southern and french inspired recipes, but also beautiful photography and informative tidbits on selecting the best ingredients. A great addition to any cookbook collection.
