Product Description Toyota Production System, Third Edition, systematically describes the changes that have occurred to the most efficient production system in use today. Since the publication of the first edition in 1983, Toyota has integrated JIT with computer integrated manufacturing technology, a strategic information system, redesign of assembly lines, and a philosophy that incorporates respect for the workers. Even today, the goals of producing the necessary items, in the necessary quantity at the necessary time are the drivers of JIT. The addition of computer integrated technology, information systems technology, and changes that boost worker morale and improve working conditions serve to further reduce costs, improve quality, and improve cycle time. The Toyota production system condsiders how to adapt production scedules to the demand changes in the marketplace while satisfying the goals of low cost, high quality, timely delivery and improved worker morale. Toyota Production System, Third Edition, is written for both practitioner and academic providing a balanced and broad approach to the Japanese production system.

The nuts and bolts of how JIT works. March 3, 1999 47 out of 49 found this review helpful
With all of the recent attention to "Lean Manufacturing" (Womak, The Machine That Changed The World, Lean Thinking), this book, now in its third edition, is different. Rather than telling you how to implement the Toyota Production System, Monden gives the reader a comprehensive technical description of how the entire system functions, and how the pieces work together to form the most effecient production system known. This is not, however, a generic overview. This book covers Toyota's implementation as it applies to building their products. Nevertheless, the principles translate to every industry where things are made. Any serious practitioner or industry leader attempting to implement or operate a lean production system needs to read, and re-read, this book.
