overview only April 17, 2008 After all the hype and great reviews I bought vol 1 and 2 and I have to confess that I was very underwhelmed by them. David Vizard is unquestionably a master engine builder but these books (my first DV books) really didnt impress me very much. I need serious engine building info not simple overviews of a thousand things packed into the limited space of 100 plus pages. I have come to realize that all the engine tuning/building books I buy both locally and online are judged on whether or not they are as good as, better or rubbish compared to A. Graham Bell's Four stroke performance book. In this case my first David Vizard books qualify as "should not have bothered". In case anyone has read my other reviews and thinks that I have a bias toward Bell's book then let me say that I do and that since buying it only one other book out of dozens since has impressed me, It remains the champ as far as Im concerned
How to Build Horsepower, Vol 2 January 20, 2007 Easy to read and understand. Practical suggestions that are easy to do with the emphasis being on results and not on particular products.
very good if you want understanding and broad knowledge November 15, 2006 bought it, read it, great price, excellent book. Previous reviews are right on. The wealth of info is detailed and vast, gives a complete understanding. Don't buy this if you're only looking for instructions on how to do a rebuild and know nothing about carbs. Buy it to understand, design & build and/or tune anything induction related- including the carb.
An absolutely OUTSTANDING book! July 6, 2006 I recommend this book without reservation. It is about what its title states, "How to Build Horsepower." Vizard tells you what you need to do to build horsepower. He does NOT tell you how to magically build power without spending any money. Power costs money but Mr Vizard tells you where to spend it.
It goes into great depth on the Holley carbs and to a lesser degree Webers and Dellortos. It also goes into good depth on the Quadrajet and some depth on the SUs. The Predator is discussed (there doesn't seem to be that much to it) but Carters are given nothing more than author's understanding that they are accurately calibratable. That said, the sections that address carburetors (as well as every other section) dispel many myths and illuminate the main principles through a combination of theory, experience, and dyno tests.
Again, this book is OUTSTANDING.
I rate this book at five stars only because there wasn't a selection for seven.

This book is a gem! February 24, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you are going to rebuild any engine and want to add horsepower as you go then this book is the ideal book to read first. The book covers all areas of any engine and where and why you can gain horsepower. The author does get technical which is a bonus to some people.
This book is written in reasonably simple English thats easy to understand by most people.Even though the book covers V8 engines you should be able to use this book for any engine not just V8's.
If you are looking for volume 2,you will find its also available from this website.Click on the authors name and scroll through the list of his books. Its still available.
I enjoyed reading and learning from this book. Its good quality and for the price its very good value. The publisher seems to be gradually reprinting all their books to a better, higher quality book. This is a good book to add to your collection.
