Just so sad and disappointing September 6, 2008 The first book in this series was a "rise above the fray" book during which I laughed and cried and fell in love with the heroine. I was so excited when I saw this book was out.
I am not sure what happened to Ms. Wiener to make her do what she did in this book. The "twist" that happens just a few chapters from the end left me shocked and in tears and all I could ask myself was why Ms. Wiener would do this to a character who had fought through her life to finally have some happiness.
I was more than disappointed. Not every book has to have a happy ending, but this was beyond reproach. Did I enjoy this book? I spent hours reading it and then felt crushed and betrayed. I am sorry I ever picked it up.
Un-Certain September 4, 2008 I expect better from such an accomplished author. It's as though her publishers wanted a new book and she wrote this in her sleep. We go back and forth from the mother's story to the daughter's story. A hackneyed device. Neither story is very interesting, so it's almost a relief when you finish a chapter and can go to the other character's story. Still she has a way with words and there are many original turns of phrase.
Nice Read September 2, 2008 So excited to sink my teeth into another Jennifer Weiner novel! While it wasn't as meaty and juicy as her past novels, it was still a satisfying read. Nice to catch up with Cannie again. Perhaps the terribly sad ending threw me off; wasn't expecting it. Do suggest getting Ms. Weiner's "The Guy Not Taken". This collection of short stories is a MUST for all of her fans.
I don't read Weiner for the sadness... August 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Jennifer Weiner's sarcastic sense of humor always delighted me, and while Certain Girls is a little "too full" in a way I can't pin down, I was eager to finish it and "see what happens." Wish I'd stopped 2/3 of the way through. I felt betrayed and angry by the sad surprise. I specifically choose "chick lit" to be entertained and lightened up - sorry Jennifer, this is my last Weiner book.
Was not disappointed... August 31, 2008 After reading many of these reviews, I was a bit hesitant about reading this book. I have read and loved all of Jennifer Weiner's books and I was worried that I would be disappointed. Well, I worried for no reason. I read Certain Girls in one day (and that is while dealing with three kids of my own...including one 14 year old girl). I am very different from Cannie and my daughter is different from Joy, but I could relate to the struggle of both mother and daughter that made up the focus of this book.
IMO, Jennifer Weiner did it again! And I look forward to another book from her.
