Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Here is all the information needed for engineers and managers to understand, design, and implement advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This is the only book to cover the principles and practical applications of modern vehicle location and navigation systems, from digital map databases, to positioning sensors and fusion methods, to human-machine interfaces, and to wireless communications technologies. It also addresses newly developed technologies including a fuzzy-logic-based algorithm, the field-emitter display (FED), a recently invented software technology for 3-D map display, and a seldom discussed integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network (iDEN). In addition, the book contains most location techniques used in finding the mobile (wireless) phone caller, such as time of arrival (TOA), angle of arrival (AOA), time difference of arrival (TDOA), and a clear explanation of Global Positioning System (GPS). Supported by 113 illustrations and 122 equations.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for engineers developing car navigation systems   February 17, 1999

It is a very well-written book covering in-depth all the related topics in vehicle navigation, a timely primer for people new to the subject and a comprehensive reference for researchers/engineers working in this field. I like its balanced treatment of fudamental theory and practical techniques. The book discusses many state-of-the-art development in the current car navigation systems such as the 3-D birdeye view of the maps, multi-sensor fusion for map matching, dynamic routing with real-time traffic info, and the wireless technology that keeps driver connected. In addition, the book also discusses a variety of techniques to locate the mobile phone caller (A FCC mandatory requirement for wireless communications services). The references to related web sites also prove to be very useful.
