Product Description Braja M. Das' Sixth Edition of PRINCIPLES OF FOUNDATION ENGINEERING maintains the careful balance of current research and practical field applications that has made it the leading text in foundation engineering courses. Featuring a wealth of worked-out examples and figures that help students with theory and problem-solving skills, the book introduces civil engineering students to the fundamental concepts and application of foundation analysis design. Throughout, Das emphasizes the judgment needed to properly apply the theories and analysis to the evaluation of soils and foundation design as well as the need for field experience. Careful Balance Of Current Research And Practical Field October 7, 2008 "..... this book maintains the CAREFUL BALANCE OF CURRENT RESEARCH AND PRACTICAL FIELD applications that has made it a leading text in foundation engineering courses throughout the country and internationally....." [from the book of the back cover]
Very good reference, surprisingly a cheap one! July 11, 2008 The only text book that cost me only ten bucks (hardcover)! However it contains all the information I needed.
A very handy book for school and then work. March 14, 2008 Braja M. Das has probably built the closest thing to a foundation engineer's bible. I had this book in school and now use it regularly at work. It helps that i know every page of what is taught here because I used it in school. The examples do not cut corners as they do in other books. It is very easy to learn. However, as a beginner you have to learn every page. There is a lot of information about soils and foundations, sometimes info that is only one line but can make a whole lot of difference in calculation. That is why this book is an important read and a wonderful write-notes-in tool.

Lacks explanation January 31, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book appears to be useful, but in reality, it isn't. The formulas are given without stating their inherent assumptions and limitations. Somewhere in the book the author states: "for an overconsolidated clay, cohesion is greater than zero; for a normally consolidated clay, it is zero." No further explanation. This is a "cookbook" type of text, perfectly suited for today's mediocrity infested mentality: grind thru a formula and produce some numbers, fast. To that end, it's a great book. My sincere recommendation to the author: double the size of the book, and turn it into an insightful, meaningful, useful book.
