4 out of 5 stars A book for heavy equipment enthusiasts   July 21, 2000
8 out of 8 found this review helpful

This Book will appeal mostly to those people interested in heavy equipment employed in the demolition of buildings.

Do not expect to find vintage machinery here, this is a state-of the-art book on how demolition of lage structures is performed today.

the demolition industry has changed dramatically in the past 20 years, especially under pressure from environmental agencies demanding to recycle as much as possible of the demolition rubble.

You wil see plenty of photographs (all in color) of the machinery used today in the demolition of concrete, steel and brick structures (mostly bridges and buildings).

Only a few years ago, demolition was sinonimous of "wrecking ball". Well today the role of the good old "Skull Cracker" has shrunk somewhat and the book shows mostly hydraulic equipment.

The book does, however, devote a chapter and some good photos to the wrecking ball and another chapter to the "implosion" of the 22-story Pacific Palisades Hotel in Vancouver.

The book contains plenty of hints about how this behemoth machinery is operated and interviews of professionals from the demolition field who explain many "tricks of the trade"
