Product Description
A hands-on handbook for the do-it-yourself refinisher From the author of the revered classic Brightwork: The Art of Finishing Wood comes this lifeline for the weekend warrior with a brush, a can of varnish, and two days to show results. As elegantly written, photographed, and color printed as its predecessor, The Brightwork Companion provides a stripped-to-the-essentials, topicby- topic presentation of procedures, bulleted lists, and summary tables. Rebecca Wittman helps readers evaluate the condition of their boats' wooden elements and provides easy-to read, two-page spreads that minimize page turning with varnish-coated fingers. This completely practical guide makes every brightwork project easier with: - Step-by-step procedures for bleaching, sanding, stripping, oiling, varnishing, and more
- Carefully designed lists, tables, and index for ease of use and reference
- Beautiful color photos
- Refinishing instructions for spars, decks, trim, interiors, and more

It saves much work down the road September 2, 2008 Face it, a good finish on the brightwork of the boat is a lot of work. Rebecca shows you how to do it right and get the maximum life out of a beautiful finish. For example, many people unknowingly shorten the life of a good varnish by excessive thinning. She explains how and when to thin to avoid degrading the protective properties of the varnish.
A good varnish job is an art as well as a science, she shows both.
Make your boat shine February 26, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A great book for boaters of all types (sail & power) Make your baby shine with the tips in this easy to carry volume. I also have the larger version of Brightwork by the same author. It contains the same information but this compact version fits into your ditty bag and a handy quick reference at the marina.
Gospel on varnishing August 8, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have owned the Brightwork book for many years and always find myself checking back with it when I do a project. I bought this book as an update for the original but have found it invaluable as an adjunct to the original text. This is the perfect reference to have aboard or in the shop with you while you are doing the project. It effectivly updates the original text in a couple of critical areas and I highly recommend it. Thanks to these two books, no one need fear varnishing again! It is gospel!
