Editorial Reviews:

Book Description
For the first time, America's favorite nanny brings all her warmth, love, and experience to bear on that most crucial and worrisome time: a baby's first twelve months.

With her unique blend of humor and empathy, Jo Frost gives parents the practical information and emotional support they need to embrace the challenge of their baby's first year. She offers clear guidance to help moms and dads become the joyful, confident parents that make a family--and little ones--truly flourish.

Packed with tips, practical information, and incredibly reassuring advice, this book tells you how to:

  • Sort out the essential equipment you need to buy before the birth
  • Babyproof your home
  • Set up for routines, feeding, sleeping, and development
  • Deal with premature and multiple births, as well as adopted babies
  • Make confident choices about going back to work, day care, and nannies
  • Cope with breastfeeding and weaning

Covering the key issues of the first twelve months, including growth charts, vaccinations, and first aid, Confident Baby Care is the perfect book for any new parent!

4 out of 5 stars A good second choice   May 13, 2008
 4 out of 4 found this review helpful

It covers all the important bases, but this book doesn't have the authoritative tone and depth of the classic childcare books such as Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, Revised Edition: Birth to Age 5 (Shelov, Caring for your Baby and Young Child, Birth to Age 5) by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care: 8th Edition or Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five (Revised Edition) by Penelope Leach. As an additional volume though, it's just fine.

The book has a whiff of cheap about it. The unsophisticated design incorporates no color photographs (the Leach book above has over 350) and less than a dozen black and white ones.

The advice, however, is sound. Throughout the book are boxed "Need to Know" items on topics such as the steps to administering medicine to a baby and when to call the doctor.

Here's the chapter list:

Part 1: Before Baby's Born
* Becoming confident parents
* Making confident first choices
* Essential equipment for provisioning your baby

Part 2: Baby's Here!
* Zero to three months
* Three to six months
* Six to nine months
* Nine to twelve months

Part 3: Exceptional Circumstances
* Multiple births
* Preemies and other special needs
* The adopted baby

Part 4: Tidying Up: Resource Guides
* Growth charts
* Immunization schedule
* Common illnesses and ailments in babies
* Meningitis
* Emergency first aid for children under one
* First aid kit
* Toys for the first year
* Useful resources
* Baby log

5 out of 5 stars 2nd time mom   May 9, 2008

I am a new second time mom and feel like this is my first child. This book shares so many helpful ideas for being a mom. I was reassured and given confidence by reading that a lot of the things I already do are suggested. This is a great book and I highly recommend it to everyone.
