An excellent and interesting orientation as to what it would take to restore an old farm tractor. I found a lot of good b&w photos and a desciptive, easy to understand text. There are appendexes listing clubs and parts vendors also. Buy this book along with a shop manual before you buy a tractor.

This book is a good overview of tractor restoration. It follows the restoration of a Ford 9N tractor to original parade ready condition and a Farmall to working condition. It has chapters on each section of restoration such as electrical systems, fuel system etc. While it describes the steps involved in some detail for the two tractors being documented, it notes the exceptions for others such as John Deere. This book will give you a good feel for what tractor restoration is about and it will even give you some detailed instructions for some of the work involved, but it will not be the sole resource needed. Fortunately the author is well aware of that fact and gives generous references as to where more information can be found, not just other publications, but also societies and parts dealers.
This book is well written and well organized. It has a lot of good photographs, even if many of them are in black and white. I recommend it as a good starting point, but certainly not the last word.

3 out of 5 stars This book is a good reference for the beginner.   September 4, 1998

I found the book to be well written and illustrated. The advice and techniques presented are sound, though somewhat over-simplified. It would be excellent reading for those who are considering a tractor restoration project. Those who have completed one or more restorations should find it interesting, but not enlightening.
