Product Description UNABRIDGED EDITION This bestselling and innovative debut novel from Audrey Niffenegger explores the perfect marriage, one that is tested by challenges the couple can neither control nor predict. An imaginative extension of everyday life, the story asks: What if two people who loved each other deeply, married, and faced a life in which one person remained constant while the other slipped fluidly in and out of time? A modern love story with a twist that invites us to linger over questions of how life and love change over time.

An incredible love story July 5, 2008 I read this book a long time ago, but came across it recently and fell in love with it all over again. Once you get over the technicalities of time travel (you just have to accept the premise and get over the fact that many of the back and forths don't really jive) you realize that the true story is the beauty of loving another person unconditionally, despite their many flaws. I cried many times during this beautifully written story and truly did not want it to end. I have recommended it many, many times since then - it is all things good about fiction: memorable, realistic characters, writing that gives you a vivid picture of the world the author is creating, and a story that you can lose yourself in. (Side note: I read this book while listening to Damien Rice's "O" - I swear, it was written with this story in mind! To this day, I can't hear that album without remembering this lovely book.)
Not worth the money July 4, 2008 I'm going to be totally honest from my own perspective. I love to read, classics and also modern works, but am not one for trashy romance novels. About the mushiest I get is Nicholas Sparks. That being said, this was, in many spots, nothing more than a poorly written (as far as plot and character development are concerned) romance novel that should have been portrayed with two scantily clad lovers embracing on the cover.
I felt like the author used the (badly described) graphic sex scenes as nothing more than filler, because she didn't know how else to portray the relationship between the two lead characters. When I wanted to see how they were getting to know each other on a deeper level, she was writing about their never-ending sex drives. Yeah, sex is important to a healthy relationship, but it was hard for me to see the connection that Henry and Clare shared beyond their physical relationship.
On another note--I don't mind bittersweet, sad endings--in fact, I prefer them, because real life is like that. As long as the ending isn't hopeless, I'm on board. But this struck me as totally and completely hopeless. It depressed me. One thing that I will grant as true that the author stated: love is waiting. But she also seems to imply that Clare pined away the rest of her life waiting for that one time when she could see Henry again in her 80's. (And thank goodness we were spared the sex scene relating to THAT encounter.) But would he really have wanted her to waste her life? Would anyone want that for someone they love? It seems to me that real love wants only happiness for others.
In conclusion: I bought this at Target, read it, and ended up returning it. Not worth the 10 bucks I spent. If I were you, I would recommend taking it out at your local library first, then buying it here if you decide you like it.
Peace out.
Enchanting - horrible ending though! June 27, 2008 A book which I bought on a whim has become the most engrossing book in years, personally. What is so intriguing about the enjoyment of this book is that it is told by two people. While the 'current' narration is a pet peeve of mine, this seems to alter slightly, and it's forgiven since it's narrated by the two main characters. The writing sense is much like that of Anne Frank's diary entries. I won't go into detail but I am less than 100 pages to the end and I am dreading having to finish this. I am in love with Henry and Clare, their situation, their past, present, future... If you want a reckless, R rated romance with heart and tragedy, look no further. Honestly the start captivated me, but then I got a little bored and put the book down for a few months... but once a friend assured me it got better, I persevered (try not to get too down if you haven't gotten up to page 76 or so - it gets better from there-on-in) and have thanked her since for her words of encouragement. What you've got here is a rare novel that makes the unbelievable completely possible. The reader gets so caught up in the story and struggles of Henry & Clare, one a normal girl, the other her future husband who can time travel (quite dangerously), that you forget about the technicalities. But even if you don't, there are great amounts of explanations of how this and that can be possible, and Niffenegger has clearly planned this entire book out. Once the end of this book came though, I was deeply disturbed by the outcome. How could Niffenegger do this!? I was completely heart-broken. I've been so moved by this book that I've gone to my piano and composed a sort of original overture. It's a beautiful book that will make you think back upon it in years to come, and you may find yourself thinking: "I wonder what Clare, and Henry, are doing right this moment?"
Gripping, Riveting...A love story that knows no time June 24, 2008 A must read! A wonderful combination of science fiction and romance. Henry and Clare are smart, interesting, and complex. Niffenegger does a great job of expressing the love between these two characters. The story teaches us that knowing the future and visiting our past are not necessarily blessings, but more often a curse. Time will continue and we are but victims to what occurs. I was deeply moved and even caught myself crying while embarking on this journey with Henry and Clare. I would give this book 10 stars if I could!
Long on Punishment, short on Reward. June 23, 2008 This book has the aura of being written in a [cold and dreary] attic by a lonely, dreamy, self-absorbed writer. It's the kind of book that could have been written in pencil, in one of those spotted black and white books kids use.
It isn't an adventure book, it isn't exciting. It isn't even interesting. It is vastly long and more than a little tedious, which makes reading it more punishment than reward.
