 Read this, whoever you may be April 14, 2008
I first read this book, and the "prequel", Freckles, when I was ten years old, both were my grandmothers, and I fell in love. I still have both books-one was published in 1907, the other in 1909,and I still re-read them. The ideals expressed are timeless! Would that we all could live up to Elnora's standards of behavior. This book is an absolute gem.

Did not enjoy this as I did the more gritty tale of Freckles, not such a rattling good tale.
A timeless classic March 14, 2008
This is a timeless classic, a gentle story, and a perfect introduction for a young child to more complex literature.
I have read it 5 times and it is a pleasure each time.

I started reading this book right after I got it.
My mom had looked it over and was wanting to read it too, so we both took turns reading chapters. It was funny because when I was reading, my mom would keep asking when I would be done with that chapter. She did not like waiting in suspence and neither did I. I stayed up past 2:00 in the morning just reading away. By the next day, both my mom and I had finished the book.
Now, about this book -- sixteen year old Elnora Comstock lives with her mother by the Limberlost swamp. Her mother does not like her because she believes that Elnora was the cause of her husband's death. Elnora earns her way through High School by collecting moths and other insects and nature things. Elnora lives patiently with her mother, hoping that Mrs. Comstock would someday show Elnora that she loves her. But dreams and all certainty were swept away when her mother steps on a beautiful Imperialis moth, which would have completed a collection that would have been worth $300. After Mrs. Comstock steps on the moth, she finally finds out the truth about her husband. Then motherly love is finally restored on Elnora.
I am not going to tell you how it ends, for that would spoil the fun in reading it. This book will definitely keep you reading!
This book is my favorite book! Anne of Green Gables used to be my favorite book, but this book, A Girl of the Limberlost is now my favorite. If you like Anne of Green Gables, you will adore A Girl of the Limberlost! Gene Stratton Porter makes you feel like you're right in the Limberlost with Elnora. You know that this book is really good if I stayed up past two reading it! I highly reccomend this book!! I hope that this review has been helpful for you. - P. Charles

This story is so beautiful, you'll want to read it over and over. If you're afraid of creepy-crawly critters, you should read this. It will change your perspective. This is one of those stories whose beauty makes you ache inside when it's over.
