Book Description
The classical idealist

French Neoclassical painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was one of the 19th century's major portrait and historical painters. First trained in drawing by Europe's most famous classicist painter Jacques-Louis David, Ingres went to Rome in his twenties, where he immersed himself in Greco-Roman art and the works of Raphael, Holbein, and Titian, and, while in Florence in 1819, was greatly influenced by Masaccio. He returned to Paris in 1824 and started his triumphant career. In 1825 he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor by King Charles X and was elected a member of the Academy. Though renowned for his painting of Oriental nudes reclining in harems or a Turkish baths, Ingres was also a master draughtsman, perhaps the most significant of the 19th century, and left 4000 sketches and drawings to his home town of Montauban. In opposition to the Romantics, Ingres upheld classical idealism with its clarity of line. His painting had a profound effect on artists like Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso and influenced, amongst others, Cindy Sherman and David Hockney.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Ingres   October 22, 2007

In its "Back to Visual Basics" series, the German Publisher Taschen has introduced a new series of books whose purpose is to serve as an introduction to the great artists of the Western tradition. Each volume is 98 pages long and is filled with high quality reproductions of the artist's paintings. Accompanying these reproductions is a scholarly essay which explains why the artist is important and the context in which the paintings were produced.

I have always admired Ingres'paintings but only have the superficial knowledge of his work that comes from an art history survey course. For an investment of about ten dollars and an hour of reading time, I now have a much richer understanding of Jean-August Dominique Ingres and his time. Having finished this book, I am now considering purchasing a more indepth study of his work. The Taschen "Back to Basic Visual" series is a great bargain and I look forward to learning more about some of the other great artists of the Western tradition. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Nice little pocketbook, but...   May 12, 2007

Excellent art printing, but far too few samples of Ingres' art, and book is rather small. Would've worked best as an oversize coffetable picture book with lots more paintings and drawings.
