Bobcats (Wildcats of North America) gives a wonderful and easy to understand view of the wildcat living within North America. For outdoor activity educators this book would be appropriate in giving an overview of the life of a creature we must learn to co-exist with in North America. The book is written in a way that is easy to understand for young people and is filled with beautiful photographs of the Bobcat's life. Aspects of mating, raising young, and hunting styles are all provided for the reader's growing education. Included in the book is a glossary for further reference as the young reader pursues his or her interest in wildlife. At the end of the book is some good advice for young people about appreciating beauty of creatures without trying to touch them or pet them , which as a child educator I greatly appreciate! The multi faceted life of the Bobcat is described in a scientific and interesting way to give a complete picture of the life of this powerful cat. The illustrated map showing habitats of the Bobcat are great for backing up the words printed within the text. Jalma Barrett describes the Bobcat in a factual and interesting way that when combined with the beautiful photographs and photo descriptions is able to hold the child's attention. I think this book is perfect for children and young children that camp, hike, perform outdoor activities, and also have an interest in wildlife. One last note about the author is she subtly discusses the effect on the Bobcat by human's misunderstanding of the beautiful creature.
