5 out of 5 stars Anxiously waiting for #3!!!   August 24, 2008
I'm not going to go into a long review of the book..... all I am going to say is that this is an excellent book and I can't wait for part 3!!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible affront to literature   August 5, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Eric Jerome Dickey is a phenomenally successful author, especially popular I gather with African American readers. He has 12 other books to his credit. I decided to see what all the fuss was about.
Now I know: It's SEX and lots of it, extremely explicit with many anatomic and gynecological details.
If the difference between erotica and porn lies in the literary quality of the work, this book definitely falls into the category of straight porn.
I won't bother to describe the plot -- it's laughable -- or the characters -- they're non-existent. But the worst aspect of this terrible affront to literature is the writing which is plain awful. Here's a sample, picked more or less at random:
"I felt as cold as a Siberian wasteland. the same way I had felt that night.
The same way I had felt in North Carolina when I killed Midnight.
The same way I had felt in Montreal when I killed that man for my mother.
The same way I had felt many nights..."
Try that for 383 pages. The first 80 or so are mainly taken up with a three-way sex scene in which our hero exchanges fluids with Lola and "Mrs. Jones. " (I kid you not!) Many shuddering orgasms take place. One of the two women says she aint no "Joanne" -- by which she means she's not a lesbian and it's OK to make love to another woman as long as one penis-bearing indivdual is in the room watching.
For what it's worth, the book takes place in London, my birthplace. For all the local color, it might as well take place in the Mall of America.
I've already wasted far too many words on this alleged book. If you like porn, be my guest. Otherwise, save your time and money.

4 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY TOO MUCH EROTICA - 2ND HALF MAKES UP FOR IT   July 25, 2008
Like other reviews have said there was entirely too much sex in this book. I read the two books (Sleeping With Strangers and this one) back to back and it was hard to get into this book right away with the chapters after chapters of sex that I had to get thru. I will say that the sex scenes were much better written than his earlier book Genevieve, but it seemed to go on and on to the point that I was thinking "get on with the story already."

Once Gideon finally gets out of bed the story picks up a lot of pace and I can definitely say that I wasn't disappointed in the story in the least after it got going. I disagree with some of the reviewers that said the plot was too complicated - I felt that even with a having a lot of characters and changing locales that I was able to follow the story very well and there were enough twists and surprises to keep me glued til the end.

I do agree however that this could have been one book instead of two. If there would have been 100 less pages of sex and then no need to repeat the shared details between the two books this could have been a great 500+ page book. Won't complain too much though, both books were worth the read although the pacing felt much tighter in Sleeping With Strangers.

I'm now looking forward to the 3rd book now.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Jerome Dickey is the best writer EVer   July 25, 2008
I loved this trilogy. It was so different from just the typical romance novel. I think Eric Jerome Dickey really outdid himself this time. I anxiously await reading his new book!

5 out of 5 stars Gideon is Alluring, Exciting, and Intellectual.   July 19, 2008
Eric Jerome Dickey has stolen my heart by creating an intellectual beast- Gideon. Dickey has the power and intellect to go beyond popular fiction, into the ranks of 'serious' literature. These books were just plain entertaining, diverting, enlivening, spellbinding, etc. I need more in a novel than I get in most authors. Everybody keeps writing about the same characters using virtually the same dialogue. Dickey, on the other hand, has reached out to those of us who like surprises. Dickey isn't afraid to show his "smart" side. He is multidimensional and extremely intelligent. I was surprised. The first book I read by him was 10 years ago, Sisters. I hated it, especially his portrayal of women. Recently, however, I had to take a long train trip and I bought both of the Gideon books because they were on sale and I needed something to keep my attention. Well! I was blown away. I cried, I laughed, I fell in love. I thank Mr. Dickey for showing us smarter, sexier, and more adventurous characters. Bravo! Good Job!!!!!!
