Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Most people come to know of Warren Buffett through his ability to generate wealth. However, as Janet Lowe reveals in her book, Warren Buffett Speaks, Buffett is more than a money-making machine. Warren Buffett Speaks is a library of notes and quotes that have been collected over the years, aimed at revealing the many aspects of the World's Greatest Investor--his wit, personality, and wisdom. The first half of the book deals with Buffett's view of life, family, and friends, while the latter half focuses on Buffett's investment philosophy and observations about the market. This book is a must for every Buffettologist.

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading.   May 23, 2008
I thought this was a good book as far as understanding what is in the mind of Buffet. I do not follow him religiously like some so this book gave book a good insight on what type of human and investor he is. This is a Warren Buffet exam cram book. Warren is a very rear person. You will not see people like him everyday. Buy this book based on that premise alone. After reading I think you will agree that this man is special, not just for his investing knowledge but as a human being.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Update   March 17, 2008
This is the updated version and, like the original, is well laid out and informative. It is not a biography, a detailed investment book or summary of annual reports. It is a great collection of quotes, with some excellent narrative, which will give you a wonderful overview of Warren Buffett and his views on investing, business and life. I particulary like the size because it is an easy take-along.

Buffett avoided the Internet bubble, identified/avoided the derivatives problem and has been a champion of reasonable executive compensation. I found myself both laughing and learning as I read this fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Insight into an Amazing Investor   February 15, 2008
This collection of insights into the mind of Warren Buffett should be read by all investors and others to give a common sense prospective and a conservative approach to investing and life in general. There is too much hype out there that needs to be balanced by realism. His wit makes the reading all that more enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars If you don't know Warren Buffett this is a nice overview   January 27, 2008
This book is a hodgepodge of information about a great man. There are lots of quotes and interesting facts about Buffett. If you already know him then there is little that is new here but it is still presented in an enjoyable way. The second half of the book is dedicated to his investing style with a lot of random stuff. For example, Lowe dumps material about Buffett's philosophies on charitable giving in this section.

Overall, good coffee table book or a nice gift for someone perhaps. However, if you are serious in wanting to learn about Warren Buffett (especially his investing style) then I would recommend reading his letters to shareholders which is posted for free in the Berkshire Hathaway website in his annual reports. These are extremely interesting and enjoyable to read even for non-investors. What makes Buffett a great man is not just his skills and talent at making money but his philosophies on various other topics.

4 out of 5 stars Finding Value and Diminishing Risk - The Warren Buffett way   January 2, 2008
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

This book is a wonderfully straightforward overview of Warren Buffett's ideas and philosophy. As the author states in the beginning of the book, "Nobody does Warren Buffett as well as Warren Buffett" - so this is a collection of quotes from annual reports and shareholder meetings, which paint Buffett's wonderfully nuanced worldview.

The reason I like this book is that Warren and I have something in common: our views on risk, debt, and uncertainty in economics. By way of recommending this book I can better communicate to those with an interest in SelfReliant my own thoughts about the composition of "risk" in financial markets. As Buffett so appropriately notes, "Risk comes from not knowing what you are doing" (106). (My own) corollary to this is simply that any "risk" one encounters can be rendered a "non-risk" through education. In this way, the entire enterprise of rendering risky behavior non-risky overlaps in a very profound way with learning, experience, and diminishing uncertainty on the part of the individual. Great education needs to make a student more certain about taking right and decent action. This is the desired outcome of every research program and educational institution.

The author also notes that Buffett "absorbed the attitude of a self-reliant pioneer", an idea reinforced by his partner, Charlie Munger, when he states that Buffett, "...believes successful investment is intrinsically independent in nature." (111) An important thing to remember for those seeking to be empowered by the ease of online stock purchasing. Think for yourself, do your reading, decrease your own uncertainty, and then hold for the long term - it's the Warren Buffett way.
