Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

This best-selling book on social aging takes a multidisciplinary approach by considering the many factors - biological, psychological, historical, cultural - that affect the way aging individuals experience the world. The book provides a comprehensive, holistic view of aging that considers an older person's interactions with their social and physical environments, including the immediate environment of family, friends, and home, as well as the larger social structure of community, organizations, and society. Based on the latest research findings, the book offers greater depth and breadth to the critical issues of aging, attending to differences by age and cohort, gender, ethnic minority status, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. For sociologists, social workers, psychologists, health professionals, and students planning to work with the elderly.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting   September 28, 2008
My middle daughter just started college and discovered the Gerentology class is very interesting to her. This book she says is amazing. She told me this is far the best out of all her classes. Atleast she loves college thats the main thing right now but since she is only a freshman that can change. She is going to be a an eye doctor.

Book has lots of information. Shows different conclusions when results of studies are dissimilar. Lots of references. Used as text for a class. Well organized.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, interesting stats...   September 17, 2007

I am only a few chapters into this book so far, but it seems to be a good read. I have already learned several new things about aging and look forward to my continued reading. My only complaint so far is that while interesting, I think that there are too many statistics. This kind of takes away the importance of some of the more pertinent facts and would be far too many to memorize.

4 out of 5 stars College level geriatrics book   February 28, 2007

This book is simple to read and it covers all topics related with aging and geriatrics. I think this is a good source, but last semester I used one by John Cavanaugh and I considered that one a level higher than thisone. I mean this is a general topic book. I bouth it for my Social Work with the Elderly college class, and I don't really consider it too deep in the topic of social Work, but more a generalized information book.
