Product Description In the bestselling tradition of the Dummies series comes a comprehensive guide to keeping mechanics honest and vehicles in top running condition. Perhaps the only 'experts' less trustworthy than car salesmen are car mechanics who may be taking owners for a ride. It's time to scare them straight with WHAT THE 'EXPERTS' MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT CAR REPAIR, a vital tool that informs readers how best to protect themselves. Chapters include 'What Your Mechanic Doesn't Want You to Know,' such as when one part is broken while another is being fixed; 'Questions You've Always Wanted Answers For,' such as asking to see the broken parts being replaced; 'Buyer Beware,' concerning intelligent shopping for used vehicles; and 'Roadside Mechanics,' detailing how to handle a broken-down car on the side of the road. Also included are sections on maintenance and the insider tricks a mechanic knows to keep a vehicle running smoothly and steadily down the highway of life. H With the success of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Trouble-Free Car Care (Alpha Books, 1999) and Auto Repair for Dummies (Wiley, 1998), which sold over 40,000 copies, and the national magazines Car and Driver, Popular Mechanics, and Motor Trend Magazine, there is no question that readers want to know how their cars work-and reverse the trend of getting ripped off by their mechanics. H As the wildly popular, nationally syndicated NPR radio show Car Talk demonstrates, everyone wants to find out exactly what their mechanics aren't telling them. Now readers will have all of this wisdom in one comprehensive can't-do-without book. H Author Mitchell Zelman has owned and operated Mitchell's Auto Repair since 1988.

Who would have thought? November 14, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Who would have thought that there could be so many ways in which your car repair person could rip you off? If you're like me, and know absolutely nothing about cars, this is a must read. It actually used terms that i could understand.I recently became suspicious after my mechanic told me that I needed new brakes for the 3rd time in 1 year. This precious gem made me realize that i was being taken for a ride. I wish that my mechanic was as considerate of me as Mitchell Zelman is of his clients. THANK YOU!
