Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Introduced in 1963, the Porsche 911 is still the world's favorite aspirational supercar. Porsche expert Paul Frere brings the story of the 911's success on road and track right up to date with the 2002 models. The 911 has been subject to continual refinement and improvement, giving rise to a range of variants that are still being developed today. Frere traces the development of the 911 in all its variants, details the bodies, interiors, engines, transmissions and suspensions, and lists year-by-year changes, together with full technical and competition details.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful for the geek, difficult for the others   October 25, 2008
If you are not really looking for a "911 story", but for a "911 development story", as the subtitle properly says, this book is probably what you are looking for.

The book is very complete from the technical point of view. I doubt that there might be on the market another book able to rival its level of technical depth.

Just do not buy it thinking that this is simply a "911 story" in the conventional meaning of the word, because it is not. Too technical and fragmented, it looks at times more like a collection of specialised monographies than an organic "history" of the car.
It is as if one would read several books, written in succession (which is, in a sense, the case).

The numerous and ponderous appendices also show that the theme is not dealt with in an organic way, and information is often scattered here and there.

These little remarks notwithstanding, the book will certainly satisfy those in need of a book with a high level of technical information about the 911.

2 out of 5 stars Gives the story but when did it happen?   January 19, 2008

I had a hard time finding dates for each change in design. Why not say that the last air cooled porsche was made in 1995 when the body change occurred in 1994? All the book says is with the such and such model came the model such and such transmission. When? Dates are lacking but a good detailed accounting of the changes to Porsche 911.

5 out of 5 stars So detailed!   November 25, 2007
On reading this book, it reminded me of the kind of thing that wouldn't seem out of place in a university library. It's so detailed on detail it's great. This is not coffee table decor, but nor is it a mechanic's repair guide; just an intensive description of 911 development from an author that seems very close to the inside workings of the Porsche factory.

2 out of 5 stars Again just another boring 911 book   February 11, 2007

For those seeking references and technical data on their 911, skip this book. First time opening the book, I have already seen all the data and pics from OLDER Porsche books. There's barely pictures in this book anyhow. For those seeking good history and techincal data for the early Porsche's, get the Brain Long books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but for fans only.   October 15, 2005

If you've ever wanted to know everything there possibly is to know about the Porsche 911, then this book is for you! Others may find it to be monotonous and boring. The book goes into great detail about every aspect of each model year 911. Paul Frere is a 911 expert and it shows! I didn't like that most of the pictures are in black and white, although there is a nice little color photo section in the middle of the book. Die hard fans of the 911 will LOVE it. Others may not.
