5 out of 5 stars Amazingly, this product works great (although for short hair only)   August 30, 2008
I've been using this product for the past three months, and I couldn't be more pleased. It produces the same quality haircut as the barber shop, and it's as quick and convenient as shaving.

I have to admit, I did not have high expectations when I ordered this product from Amazon. After it arrived, it took me another month to work up the courage to use it. Finally, on the first day of my vacation, when I knew I would have time to grow out my hair a bit if the clipper made a mess of things, I took the plunge.

It turns out that the clipper is incredibly easy to use. Because of the curved design and bidirectional cutters, the optimal motion is very similar to shaving. You just "comb" the clipper back and forth around your head until you've covered all areas. It's amazingly simple and produces very even results. You can literally use it with your eyes closed.

I have not had the problem noted by another reviewer of clogged blades. I keep my hair trimmed short (about 1/4 inch, or the No. 2 comb on a traditional hair clipper), and the short hairs just fall away. I suspect that this trimmer is really only suitable for short hair.

Two issues you should note, though:
1) The trimmer comes from the factory with the balding comb attached. You need to pop it off and replace it with the comb that let's you set hair length. This is a silly way to ship the clipper -- unless you read the instructions carefully, you might miss this important detail and end up with an essentially shaved head. Remington should ship it with the safer comb and let you switch to the balding comb.
2) The trimmer doesn't have a battery gauge like many shavers, and it cannot run directly off AC power (it won't turn on when plugged into the charger). This can be inconvenient if the trimmer runs out of power half way through a haircut. I've made it a habit to charge the trimmer once a month whether it needs it or not. A batter gauge would be nice.

Bottom line: This clipper has exceeded my expectations. It allows me to cut my own (admittedly short) hair at home as easily as shaving, rather than having to make trips to the barber shop. It has already paid for itself, let's me cut my hair more frequently (and therefore avoid the "hey, you got your hair cut" syndrome when I'd let it get too long before cutting), and is super convenient. What a nice surprise.

4 out of 5 stars Remington SC100 Comb Clippers   August 29, 2008
Remington Short Cut Clipper I like this product for me and my son. I am cutting mine on the 3 setting which is short but not shaved bald and doing it weekly. I like the way it cuts and looks. I am cutting my son's setting 4 on top and setting 3 on sides and back of head. His hair was thick, and it took much longer to do his, but even his mother liked it. With this device it is much harder to make a mistake than the old clippers. I would say it is great for an older balding guy.

5 out of 5 stars Precise haircutting for the DIY-er   August 28, 2008
The devil is in the details, or so the saying goes. With the RSCC, Satan's been forced out of the hair-cutting business.

Over the years, I've become a proponent of self-cut short hair. It's easier to manage and I don't have to deal with barbers who no longer want to be called barbers but aesthetes.

The normal clippers I use while perfectly adequate always seem to leave a section of hair longer or shorter than others. This is very frustrating. The Short Cut Clipper cuts hair perfectly to the same desired length with every pass. The design of it means I can hold it like a comb and move it through the hair as with a comb.

The curved cutting clippers that can be raised and lowered with a clicker setting combined with a guard ensures the DIY barber will not be able to give himself (or herself?) a bad haircut. Highly recommended and a joy to own.

3 out of 5 stars An OK Clipper, Especially for Touch-ups   August 26, 2008

I've been cutting my husband's hair at home for over 14 years now. He has fine, soft, silky hair on the sides and the back but unfortunately has a very deep receding hairline and not much hair on top (male pattern baldness).

His hair was getting shaggy around his ears and the back of his neck so I decided to test the Remington Short Cut Clipper by giving him a touch-up haircut. As per the instructions, I removed the balding comb that was attached and replaced it with the normal clipper comb. Then I dialed the length to setting 4 and started in. The Clipper's curved blade worked easily and smoothly but I couldn't see much difference in the hair length. I dialed the setting to 2 and went over the back and sides of his head again. It was quite easy and light to use and I really liked that it operated smoothly and fairly quietly. His hair was evened out and looked really nice. The only problem was that he still had a lot of little neck hairs and the hairline at the back of his neck needed to be evened up.

I pushed the button to bring out the little detail blade and tried it on the back of his neck. That did not work well at all. I really couldn't see that it was doing much good. As a matter of fact, it seemed to be pulling rather than shaving. We tried it a bit longer but it just wasn't working well there and Dave was losing patience with all the pulling...even though, I swear, I was trying to be very gentle.

I pushed the button again to retract the little detail blade and pulled off the comb attachment from the shaver. That worked superbly! Dave said it felt fine and there was no pulling or gouging. It shaved the little neck hairs very closely and the back of his neck looked and felt great. It only took about 30 seconds to even up the neck line and clean up the neck hairs. Success!

As I said earlier, there is not a lot on top to work with and since this was just a touchup haircut, anyway, I didn't need to cut anything there today. He prefers to keep his comb-over hair on top and since the balding comb actually gives a very close buzz cut I doubt that we will ever be using that particular attachment.

This haircutter was lightweight and felt good in my hand. The curved blade made it very easy to cut hair evenly. I also like the fact that it is much less noisy than the electric Vidal Sasson VSCL802 10-Piece Haircutting Kit that we have been using for several years now. It was very nice not having a cord to drag around, too. The Remington Short Cut Clipper comes with a handy little brush so the clipper clean-up was easy. I just brushed the cut hair away from the blade. It also comes with a small bottle of oil so re-lubing the blade is easy.

The whole shaver can be rinsed under water. The directions recommend re-lubing the blade after doing that. I felt that for this first haircut just brushing off the blade worked just fine.

My biggest pet peeve about Remington Short Cut Clipper is that once you unpack it from the box there is no easy way to keep all the pieces organized and together. I think a plastic storage case where all the pieces had a place would have been wonderful. At the least, I think some sort of a soft cloth storage bag with a draw string opening should have been included. I currently have mine stored in a freezer zip lock bag. It is fine for now but I am careful with it since there is no added protection for the shaver or accessories. The other thing that disappointed me was that it takes 14-16 hours to get a full charge into the unit. It will not operate while it is charging, either. The charge light is quite a bright blue. While it was charging on the bathroom counter it really did double as a quite bright nightlight.

Overall, I give this product 3 stars. In summary,it's easy to use and cuts hair evenly and smoothly but I do not like the detail blade - it pulled rather than shaved and I think it could easily cut tender ears or the skin on the back of the neck. The curvature of the main blade worked very well and made it very easy to trim hair. It's relatively quiet to operate but there is nothing provided in the box to keep all the pieces and parts organized and together. And finally, it takes a long time to charge up.

5 out of 5 stars Best Personal Care purchase ever!   August 25, 2008
This is a very sweet little unit. My mother is a professional hairstylist and has cut my hair all my life (44yr). Unfortunately, I don't get to see her as often as I'd like anymore and since I usually keep a short haircut I started to look for a product that could maintain my haircut. A little searching on the 'net yielded this beauty.
This unit does exactly what it advertises. I use a middle setting every week or so and my hair it cut to perfection for me. I also have a mustache and small beard and am able to keep it just as closely trimmed and neat with the Remington ShortCut.
Yes, it does take an overnight charge to get it working initially, but I can cut my hair several times on one charge and have never had it quit while I was in the middle of a cut.
My wife and mother have both commented on how good of a job the unit does to keep and maintain my haircut. It also is wonderful for trimming your neck below the hairline. Just set it to the lowest setting and that neckhair is gone.
The little trimmer that is on the top of the unit is neat for trimming the hair around your ears and also trimming up the corners of my beard.
All in all, a great product!
