Clouded Plastic Headlights
Plastic surfaces are great for giving vehicles lightweight, durable components – from plastic headlight lenses to motorcycle windshields, plastic tail lights, trailers and more. But these plastic components can yellow and haze with weather, sun and sand, limiting visibility and diminishing the appearance and value of the vehicle. While the impact on a vehicle's value varies, the dangers in terms of limited visibility are clear: It is a factor in 2.8 million accidents, 23,000 fatal crashes and 2,300 pedestrian deaths each year, according to the Motor Vehicle Lighting Council. Dim headlight bulbs and hazy plastic headlight lenses or surfaces may lead to this reduced visibility, putting you, your passengers and other cars at risk. The AAIA Car Care Council found that 26 percent of the cars it inspected had issues with their lighting system. Millions of cars on the road today have plastic headlight lenses. The problem increases with the age of the lens, and with the average age of cars on the road about 10 years old, the problem is growing. Yet there is something you can do about it.

The Do-It-Yourself Solution
The 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System is designed to give do-it-yourselfers an easy and affordable way to repair their vehicle's plastic lens surfaces. Containing various graded sanding pads, pad holders, buffing pads, polish and detailed instructions, it includes everything users need to turn their household drill into a low cost solution to this dangerous automotive problem. The Lens Renewal Kit can also be used to repair hazing on other plastic surfaces, including taillights, emergency light bars, plastic motorcycle lights, trailers, snowmobiles and more. Compared to having headlight lenses commercially repaired for approximately $75-$150 or replaced for up to $1,500, the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System costs a fraction of that price, and the entire process takes under an hour, depending on the extent of the damage.

How Does it Work?
The steps for using the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System are as easy as 1-2-3. First, sand the hazed surface in a two-stage wet sanding process with the enclosed sanding pads until the surface is smooth and the dulled layer is removed. Then polish with the 3M plastic polish, and buff with the buffing pad to the level of clarity desired in the plastic. In addition to a standard household drill mentioned (1200-1600 rpm) used in the buffing process, you will also need 3M Automotive Masking Tape to protect the body panels of your car surrounding the work area, and a spray bottle and water used in the wet sanding process. Otherwise, everything that you need is included in the kit.

Features:

  • 3M abrasive technology and a polishing compound to restore hazy and dull headlight lenses, as well as other plastic lens surfaces on your vehicle.
  • System is intended to restore two headlight lenses.
  • Utilizes the muscle power of a common household (1200-1600 rpm) drill to do all the necessary sanding and buffing.
  • This inexpensive kit saves hundreds of dollars and restores crucial night time visibility by restoring your own lenses.
  • Easy, 3-step process requires as little as an hour to remove scratches and restore cloudy, dull lenses.
What's in the Box
1-disc pad holder, 1-3M soft interface pad, 6-3M sanding discs, 4-3M finishing discs, 1- 3M trizact disc, 1-3M headlight lens polish/rubbing compound (1 oz), 1-buffing pad, step-by-step directions.

Limitation of Liability
Except where prohibited by law, 3M will not be liable for any loss or damage arising from the 3M product, whether direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequential, regardless of the legal theory asserted, including warranty, contract, negligence or strict liability.

2 out of 5 stars Caution if you don't have the MOST PITIFUL HEADLIGHTS!!   March 16, 2010
V. Rodriguez (NC, USA)
For the most part I take very good care of my cars. When I purchased this 3M product, I was looking at getting rid of some crusty sun damage that had emerged on the upper portion of my headlights (Garaged 2001 T&C). Everything was conveniently included in the kit and I had a drill with extra batteries, plus a professional polisher to boot (if needed) to get the job done. I taped the instruction sheet to the hood before I started working to assure I followed everything to the T. The entire process probably took about 2 hours. I was determined to get the perfect milky look on the lenses before going to the polishing stage, and to be honest, all that sanding was definitely taking something off (good or BAD?).

I finally get the the final polishing stage and I am excited to see the gloss coming back to the headlights. Unfortunately, by the time I was done I noticed something that wasn't visible in the pictures and advertisement...
While the most sun damaged portion of the lenses did look better, it wasn't anywhere near as good as a new headlight (please) AND it made the undamaged portion of the headlights look overall dull.
So OVERALL, you do get a semi clearish look, but at the sacrafice of completely STRIPPING AWAY ALL FACTORY SEALANT/GLOSS. Never get that back!
This kit is only for the most pitifully damaged headlights. You bet 3M recommends you use this kit again, you'll need it to continually cover your overexposed headlights now that you've STRIPPED THEM BARE. Buyer beware! I'd look elsewhere for headlight restoration next time :(

4 out of 5 stars It really works!   March 14, 2010

This product really works, restored clarity to head lights on two cars. Of course it isn't like a brand new lights but good enough to see a big difference in the brightness at night.
It does take a bit of work, about an hour for me, and a little guessing as to how much sanding is necessary at each step.
Would recommend this product to anyone who wants to be able see the road again at night.

5 out of 5 stars Restored the unrestorable   March 5, 2010
Sean Marrone (Shanti on a mountain)
I used this product on a 15 year old vehicle with fogged over, yellow headlights (it was originally clear and white). The instructions are in color and extremely detailed so that you will not miss any step in the process. It was easy to use and took about 30 minutes per headlight. One important bit of advice: make sure you do have a drill that is 1200-1600 rpm so that it works properly, anything less would not be enough; and anything more would be too much.

There is nothing bad to say, it works and works well.

5 out of 5 stars Clears up polycarbonate head lamps   March 3, 2010
JAB (Palo Alto, CA United States)
This worked great. The headlights on my Honda Civic were turning opaque resulting in poor visibility at night. I read about the product in Trailer Life magazine which prompted me to give it a try. It only took me 1 hour to do both headlights and they came out like new. If you have problems with your polycarbonate head lamps turning opaque then I highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Headlight Restoration is a SUCCESS.....   February 28, 2010
Stephen Flanders (Ft. Lauderdale, Fl)
I have added a picture to the product page to show the results of the product. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to remove any yellowing/oxidation from the vehicles headlights. It will improve night time visibility, as well the vehicles appearance. Just make sure you follow the instructions by the tee, if reading is a problem for you then go their website [...] and watch the video. Purchase additional kits for extreme yellowing. I found that I used the 3 pads ( sandpaper P800/p500) per headlight to get the results shown on the product page.
